7/8 Update

July 7 - Mechanicsville National 12 - Huguenot National 2

The Huguenot National 11 year old team got off to a bumpy start, losing their opener to an experienced Mechanicsville National team 12-2 in 6 innings.  Benjamin started on the mound for HLL and kept the MLL team off balance for a couple innings with his change-up before tiring in the 3rd.  A tag team of pitchers including Lauren, Tucker, Steven, Malik, and Max followed and were able to strike out 8 MLL batters over the course of the game. Unfortunately, MLL picked up enough hits to put the game away.

The Huguenot bats were quiet, with only Tucker, Lauren, and Max picking up singles against a very solid Mechanicsville defense.  Some incredible plays by the MLL shortstop had the fans wondering if anybody checked his birth certificate.  Hats off to the MLL team who played a very clean game.

HLL Nationals play Chamberlayne who lost to Atlee in a hard fought match. The game is Friday night at 8pm (weather permitting).

7/10 Update

Chamberlayne 12 - HLL National 7

Unfortunately, the All-star tournament ended too early for the HLL National team.  The Nationals faced a series of strong pitchers from the Chamberlayne squad which struck out 11 of the HLL batters while giving up only 3 hits.

Chamberlayne pounced early, sending 4 runners across the plate to go up 4-0 in the first.  Steven D. pitched well, but the strong hitters from Chamberlayne pounded a few in the right and left field gaps for doubles.  Huguenot wouldn't go down easily, though, as we bounced back in the 2nd inning to push across 6 runs with the help of some walks and a key hit by Max.  HLL held the 6-4 lead until the bottom of the 3rd.  That inning started out promising for HLL when the Chamberlayne leadoff batter crushed another hit to right center, but a great throw from Ben to Tucker to Lauren nailed the runner trying to stretch it to a triple.  The next Chamberlayne hitters responded and still pushed across 4 more runs to go up 8-6.

Offensive production for HLL was limited, but Max, Will and Jonathan contributed singles to the effort.  Brandon was solid defensively at 2nd base with 3 assists on some tough ground balls.  Tucker showed his quickness behind the plate when he quickly pounced on a passed ball and flipped to Lauren covering home from the mound to get the runner trying to score.

Although it was brief, the tournament gave some new HLL players a taste of all-star experience.
