7/8 Update
Huguenot American began the tournament tonight with a solid performance and a 7-3 win over
Richmond, after trailing 3-1 through 3 innings.
Pitching and defense were the keys to the win....Jared and Jake threw a combined 67 pitches for the game in three innings each. They dominated the Richmond batters all night, continually attacking the strike zone. Two hits and no earned runs shows how well they both pitched....the outs were distributed around with 7 K's, 6 ground balls and 5 flyouts, the last a nice running catch by Oliver in right field.
Our offense started slowly against a tall lefty from Richmond and we struggled to put the ball in play. We had 7 K's in the first three innings however there were several great at bats where the boys battled hard....none better than Nicholas' 9 pitch at bat that eventually resulted in a solid single up the middle. The Richmond starter was out after 3 innings having thrown 86 pitches.
Our hitting improved in the second half of the game and in the 4th inning we scored 5 runs to take the lead...the key hit a 2 RBI double from Jake. Cole also had 2 RBI in the inning. In addition Hunter had two hits for the game and Nathan and Jack also had hits.
We now play Mechanicsville American tomorrow night 7/8/11 5.30 at Chesterfield LL. Come out and support us!
7/9 Update
Huguenot American lost last night 11-5 to a strong Mechanicsville American team. Unfortunately the weakness we saw in the first part of Thursday's game, an inability to put the ball in play, hurt us here. Although we only had 5 hits, we had 7 walks as well and twice were able to load the bases with either one or no one out. We only scored one run combined in those two situations as Mechanicsville was able to get a couple of the 7 strikeouts we registered for the game.
Once again our pitching and defense was pretty solid and although we made two errors, neither of those hurt us. Hunter pitched well for 4 outs until injury took him out and then Joe threw hard to get us to the fifth inning. The difference was that Mechanicsville was able to get some well placed hits when they had runners on. Cabell and Robbie ran down a couple of long flyballs in the outfield and Jake had two nice defensive plays at first base. Will did well behind the plate for the full six innings.
Now in the losers bracket we are drawn to play Chamberlayne on Saturday however as Chamberlayne withdrew from the tournament that results in a forfeit win for Huguenot. Our next game will be Monday evening at 5.30 and our opponent depends on the result of games Saturday.
