7/1 Update
The Huguenot LL Major Softball All Stars opened the District 5 tournament by falling to a very tough Tuckahoe squad by the final score of 18-3.
A leaky Huguenot defense and a lack of hitting were the one-two punch that knocked Huguenot out. Six errors in the first two innings helped Tuckahoe build a 7-0 lead, as the Tuckahoe pitcher was fanning four of the first six Huguenot hitters she faced. With Tuckahoe hitting in the top of the third, Huguenot briefly gained a bit of momentum when Sage turned in the defensive play of the tournament. She raced from her CF position to chase down a laser in the right-centerfield gap, then alertly turned and threw a dart to second base to double off the runner who had not tagged up and had strayed too far from the base. With two now out and no one on, still trailing just 7-0, the girls looked to get out of the inning with no damage. Unfortunately the next nine Tuckahoe hitter reached safely, resulting in six more Tuckahoe runs and a 13-0 lead.
Huguenot trailed 18-0 in the last of the fourth before the girls managed to score 3 runs off of five walks and their lone hit of the night, courtesy of Sadie. Deanna, Sadie, and Brady scored the runs with Amy, Lauren and Abigail being credited with the runs batted in. But it was not enough to keep the 10 run rule from being enforced, ending the game 18-3 in favor of The Team Up North.
Next up for the Huguenot Major SB girls is a 7/2, 5:30 p.m. game versus the upstart Chesterfield LL.
7/2 Update
The Huguenot Major SB team faced off versus Chesterfield LL in their second tournament game. A nailbiter through three innings turned into a Huguenot romp in the 4th, as our girls were able to get their first tournament victory by the score of 21-9.
Huguenot threatened in the top half of the first, loading the bases on Abigail's walk, and base hits from Sadie and Brady. But the girls were unable to push any runs across. Sadie took the mound for Huguenot in the bottom of the first and neatly set the Chesterfield girls down in order.
In the Huguenot second, the offense sprung to life. Raquel set the tone with a hard shot but was put out on a fine play by the Chesterfield second baseman. Deanna then walked and Sarah, Abigail, and Sadie all provided two out hits. Brady was hit by a pitch, Amy had a clutch double into right field, and Lauren walked. Amy and Lauren were both able to score on wild pitches before the final out was recorded, and Huguenot led 7-0. But Chesterfield came to play and responded admirably in the home half of the second. Two walks and four base hits later, Huguenot's lead was cut to 7-5. Deanna made two fine plays at second base to help minimize the damage.
In the top half of the third Kaylyn and Sarah has base hits to push Huguenot to an 8-5 lead, before a questionable call of leaving the base early on a Huguenot runner ended the threat. On defense, Abigail relieved Sadie in the third and pitched well, but was hurt by a couple of Huguenot errors that lead to two unearned runs. With the bases loaded and two out, Sarah made a fantastic, clutch catch of a fly ball in left field to end the threat. But Chesterfield had cut the margin to 8-7 after three full innings.
Then came the decisive 'Fourth of July'. The Huguenot offense sent 17 hitters to the plate in the top of the fourth inning, exploding for 13 runs. The July 4th fireworks had seemed to come two days early. Sage doubled on a flare to right that drove in Brady and Amy. Sadie rocketed a three-run double down the left field line to score Olivia, Kaylyn and Abigail. Brady followed with a laser into the gap in right-center for a double that scored Sadie. After Amy, Sage, and Olivia walked, Kaylyn blasted a double into the outfield to score them all. By the time Huguenot's 4th had ended, our girls led 21-7.
The Chesterfield team had no give up in them though, so Abigail had to battle on the mound through the home half of the fourth. The Huguenot defense was able to cut two runners down at the plate: one on a relay from Olivia in right to Sadie at SS to Brady at catcher for the tag play. Kaylyn at 3B also threw a runner out on a bases loaded force play at home. With the bases still loaded, Abigail was then able to induce a roller to second base that Deanna ate up and threw to first for the final out of the game.
Once again, the final score: Huguenot 21- Chesterfield 9. Congratulations girls on an outstanding all around team effort and a great all star win.
Next up for Huguenot: A Sunday, 7/3, 6:00 p.m. rematch with The Team Up North.
